Something that happened today...

The Plight Of A Bird

8:30AM

A young man stared out across the open gravel lot. The sun was dreadfully hot and the day had only just begun. Not far away a crow landed and began picking through the rocks. The youth had always liked birds, and for most of his childhood his family owned chickens. One day he would have a bird of his own, a smart bird, like a small flying dog. The crow continued its foraging, ignorant of the thoughts bouncing through the man's mind. The crow began to hop as it traveled on foot before being obscured by an old rusty trailer. The man quickly shook of his head from the clouds and continued to load pallets into piles on top of yet more pallets.

11:25 AM

The attic was dusty and hot, the sun shone brightly in the tall room and even with the doors open and a good draft the heat was still unbearable. Great metal boxes sat in stacks, waiting to be used and years of dust stirred into the air. The young man was hard at work moving the boxes to a pallet, so they could be taken down from the rafters and away to a pile of scrap iron in the back. A flutter of feathers caught his attention, he looked out over the low wall of the upstairs area towards the large windows adorning the front of the building. A small dark blue shape tried desperately to bypass the invisible barrier to no avail. The man walked down the stairs to the ground floor, and approached the struggling avian. It saw him of course, but it's efforts to flee were only met with the presence of the window. The man continued his approach until he stood right behind the panicking mass of feathers. When the bird tried to fly through the glass he held his hand under and cupped his other hand over the thrashing avian. When his hands came together the bird stopped moving, cocooned in the dark cave of hands. The man moved his thumb to look upon the small bird he had caught. The feathers of the bird's wings and back were of a deep navy blue. Its underbelly was white, and the tiny feet and claws were black.

"Hey there little guy, not easy to fly through a window is it?"

The bird stared back at its human captor, no doubt absolutely terrified. The head of the bird was totally smooth and it's eyes were pure black. The bird's black beak was parted and it breathed in quick puffs, panting from the heat and it's recent exertion. Despite the hole in the hand cave the bird made no bid to escape. The man walked into a bigger room with several large open doors before opening his hand completely. As soon as he did the bird became a dark little blur as it flew back into the outdoors.

This story is a recounting of events that took place earlier today (5/29/2020) when I was at work.

And yes, I do want a pet crow at some point, that would be totally rad.
